This year for our annual Christmas Party the South Australia Branch of the ACA will be going on a historic walking tour of Port Adelaide, before heading to the Pirate Life Brewery.
There are only 20 spots available on the walking tour, so if you would like to attend the walking tour, you must select a free ticket for the walking tour as well as the $30 ticket for the brewery tour.
Port Adelaide is a city with a unique, salty tang to its environs and is the historic
maritime heart of South Australia and home to some of the finest historic
buildings in the State. Officially established in 1840, only four years after
the foundation of the State, Port Adelaide played an integral role in the
colonial development of South Australia. The first migrants though, wading
through the mud of nearby “Port Misery”, had a daunting start to a new life in the
fledgling colony. By the 1870s however, wharves were built, solid stone
warehouses and homes were erected and signs of Port Adelaide’s prosperity were
Port Adelaide has retained many of its impressive 19th Century
buildings, which, within the boundaries of Nelson Street, St Vincent Street,
Todd Street and McLaren Parade, form the State’s first Heritage Area. On this
guided walk you will learn about some of the interesting stories which gave
Port Adelaide its reputation including the famous ‘Six O’Clock Swill’ which had
historical beginnings in Port Adelaide. The walk will take you through the
heart of Port Adelaide and finish up at an old converted wool store, now
housing the Pirate Life Brewery, this section starts from 7 pm.
