The Australasian Corrosion Association and The Surface Coatings Association of Australia have come together to organise a site visit for their members to learn about the Coating Research and Test Equipment at Curtin Corrosion Centre.
Curtin Corrosion Centre (CCC) has been conducting state-of-the-art scholarly and demand-driven corrosion and materials research for over 30 years. Their research activities have systematically contributed to the success of various industry partners, such as oil & gas, mining and resources, shipping building, and infrastructure industries. A common challenge faced by these sectors is the ongoing battle on managing atmospheric corrosion.
The use of protective coatings to mitigate atmospheric corrosion is a well-established, reliable, and cost-effective strategy. However, the premature failure of protective coatings can occur due to a multitude of different reasons, such as application error, incorrect specification, environmental changes, and faulty paint. These premature failures result in less effective corrosion mitigation strategies, affecting safety standards and rapidly increasing maintenance budgets.
The Curtin Corrosion Centre excels at demand-driven research, with numerous examples of national and international success stories. In particular, coating research targeting fit for purpose testing has provided valuable data to asset owners. The primary aim of these activities is to understand the behaviour and performance of protective coatings under simulated conditions; while the secondary goal is to gain an understanding of the risks and limitations of the corrosion mitigation strategies. The outcomes of these activities have assisted decision-making process at critical stages of managing an asset.
During this presentation and tour of the Curtin Corrosion Centre Coating Research Facility, delegates will get an opportunity to learn more about Curtin Corrosion Centre’s coating testing capabilities, e.g., equipment such as the salt spray test chamber, environmental test chamber, and large-scale seawater immersion testing tools, along with various in-situ and ex-situ coating assessment techniques. Speakers will also share case studies of coating fit for purpose testing executed at Curtin Corrosion Centre.
